Richelieu

The name of Poitou derives from "Picts", a
Gallic people of traders and sailors who has let its trace in the British islands. So
Poitou could foresee its teared destiny between England and France.
As a matter of fact, this region was all along its history in conflict or in rebelion
relationships. During the Hundred Years war, Du Guesclin conquered La Rochelle and
Saintonge. La Rochelle, first templar harbour in the Middle Age, entered in rebelion
against king François Ist under the Renaissance. But the most famous episode will remain,
in the memories, the siege Richelieu layed to it from 1627 to 1628. At this date
La Rochelle was a Protestant stronghold. |
