Funerary plaque of
Geoffroy Plantagenêt
(Geoffroi le Bel)
In golden brass and encrusted enamels
(middle of the 12th century).
Tessé museum, Le Mans. |
With a
seaside on Atlantique Ocean and the port of Nantes, the Lands of the Loire river are
constituted with Anjou, Maine, Nantais and Vendean bocage.
Domain of the Plantagenêt family, the wedding of Geoffroy with Mathilde heir of
Normandy and England dynastic families will give to this kingdom one of its more brilliant
lineage (with Richard Lion's Heart, especially). It also provocates, in the following
centuries, the war of the Hundred Years between Anglo-Burgundians and French. All along
its history, this wound will be never healed and from a war to another one between
the Protestants and the Catholics then between the Vendeans and the Republican army
(during the French Revolution).
The commerce will prosper there, however,
with Tours, first, then Nantes thanks to trade with the New World. |
