Les Alpes-de-Haute-Provence

Digne :
Lavender trading center, Digne is a spa where between two cures you could visit its cathedrale and its museums. Discover also the citadel of Sisteron, the Roman pillars and the Merovingian baptistry of Riez.

Do not miss the Gorges of Verdon, the canyon of Oppedette and the Ubaye and Lure moutains. The panorama is unique.

Visit also the natural Park of Lubéron and sites as the Ganagobie priory (12th century), the citadel of Entrevaux and the old villages (Simiane, Banon, Lurs, Annot).

For ski lovers, Ubaye valley proposes many possibilities with stations of La Pra-Loup (1,635m), La Condamine Sainte-Anne (1,655m) as well as Haut-Verdon valley with La Foux d'Allos (1,800m).

 

Les Hautes-Alpes

Gap :
Highest town of Europe (1,324m), Briançon is a fortified city untill its churches. Saint-Véran is the highest commune of Europe (2,042m, the communal area extends from 1,800m to 3,800 m). On the road, you should not miss Embrun, a touristic station with its fortified city and its Notre-Dame cathedrale (12th -14th centuries).

The mounts of Pelvoux, Meije, Champsaur and Dévoluy are famous natural sites housing many grottos and «chourums» (swallow holes). Visit also the Ecrins park, lakes and rivers and ski stations like Super-Dévoluy, Serre-Chevalier, Montgenèvre.

Do not miss the castle of Tallard and the fortified city of Montdauphin.

Les Alpes-Maritimes

It is undoubtfully the most attractive touristic region of France after Paris.

Nice, Cannes, Monaco or Vallauris and Grasse are only themselves towns which names are associated to flowers and perfumes, to carnival and international film festival. Finally, you can enjoy here a certain Art of life under the Mediterranean sunlight.

Nice, its Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels), and its Promenade des Anglais (English promenade) on the sea front lead you from the international airport to the old city. Here you will immerse yourself in the real historical center. Its Baroque churches (Saint-Augustin, Saint-François-de-Paule), the Lascaris palace (17th century), the villa Masséna, the Cimiez cloister and gardens and its flowers market are a must when visiting the city. So, you can also feel the presence of an important Russian emigration at the beginning of the 20th century. A perceptible trace is the Orthodox church (1912), in Tsarévitch street.

Grasse remains the capitale of perfume we continue to elaborate here from the most refined extracts like rose (Grasse’s rose is highly valued Worldwide). To these scents we could associate Fragonard. Grasse houses this great painter museum.

Antibes is a sea resort between Nice et Cannes. At Biot, you should visit museums Grimaldi and Fernand-Léger.

Cannes, the stars, its festival palace. Is it useful to present its Croisette ? But you could discover other treasuries as Suquet, Castre museum and, off Cannes, islands of Lerins with the monasteries of Sainte-Marguerite (Do not miss the famous jail of the "Mask of Iron" too) and Saint-Honorat.

Art city, Vallauris becomes famous for its potteries. Here, you ought to visit the Picasso museum.

For some walks, Mercantour park is an interesting promenade. The history lovers could perfer Napoléon road which retraces Emperor coming back for hundred days after he escaped from Elbe’s island.

Les Bouches-du-Rhône

Marseille :
Marseille is a port open on the Mediterranean as a door on the East. How many merchants, traders and travellers landed there ? Marseille is a vivid illustration of a melting pot of religions, cultures, personal stories and histories. Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde church dominates the old-harbour, ancient Phenician trading post. Do not miss the Pharo’s castle, the palace of Longchamp, the museum and the fine-Arts museum and the Saint-Victor abbey. Have a rest on the famous Cannebière to sample a Pastis accompanied with tapenade (spicy olives purée). Off Marseille, you should visit the castle of If. On this island you could remind literary or cinematographic souvenirs with Earl of Monte-Cristo.

Arles conserves Roman vestiges, arenas (4h century), therms ruins of Constantin’s palace and its theater.
You should discover other interesting vestiges at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence with an ark (1st century BC) and the Jules mausoleum (5th century).

Apart from Camargue national park, a promenade in the calanques, rocky creeks (of Marseille or Cassis) really changes from old routine. You ought to visit the village of Allauch, or the windmill of Alphonse Daudet at Fontvieille-la-Tour. Do not miss a tour at Aix-en-Provence for its Mirabeau court, its 17th and  18th centuries mansions and the Saint-Sauveur cathedrale. Visit Cassis with its picturesque fishing port.

 

Le Var

Toulon :
Naval dockyard as well as commerce and yachting port, Toulon history is connected to Royale Marine. Here you should visit  the Marine Museum, the Faron Mount, the Royale tower (16th century) and the roadstead. Do not miss the Sainte-Marie-Majeure cathedrale which dates from the 11th and the 12th centuries.

Var declines along its coast famous beaches. Their names are famous : Saint-Raphaël, Saint-Tropez, Juan-les-Pins, or Sainte-Maxime, Bandol, Sanary and Hyères. It is the stars or the sunlight lovers rendez-vous (3,000 hours of sunlight per year).

You should also see the gorges of Ollioules, the lakes of Carcès or Saint-Cassien, the cascades of Trans or Callas, and to visit the Thoronet abbey (end of the 12th century), the Carthusian monastery of Verne, the Six-Fours Collegiale (11th -12th centuries) or the Roman monuments at Fréjus.

Le Vaucluse

Avignon :

During the Middle-Age, the city was the popes' abode  (1309-1377). It preludes to the Great West Schism till 1409. It remains from this period the Popes palace,  the ramparts, the Petit Palais, and some churches.
You should not miss the Romanesque church of Notre-Dame-des-Doms, and the Saint-Nicolas chapel (Romanesque, remanied in the 13th century).
You should visit the museums of Calvet, Lapidary and Petit Palais.

Apart Avignon, Vaucluse has many attractive sites.
Do not miss Orange and its Antiquated theater,
Vaison (Gallo-Roman vestiges and medieval small market town), Gordes (the Bories' village - Bories are dry stony houses).
You should also visit Sénanque (Cistercian abbey), Montmirail (lacemakery), Fontaine-de-Vaucluse (Pétrarque’s house, its fountain and its Romanesque church), Carpentras (the oldest synagogue of France).
Go for a promenade in Lubéron and Ventoux, or the valleys of Durance and Calavon rivers.
