Formed with Flanders, Hainaut and Cambrésis (dept. of Nord) and with Artois,
Boulonnais and Ternois (dept. of Pas-de-Calais), Nord was in the middle of the
European Empires.
According to weddings, alliances or battles (Bouvines in 1215), it was
successively under different influences as Celt, Roman, German, Franc then French,
Burgundian, English, Spanish and finally French under the reign of king Louis XIV.
With its particular situation on a major route and also, with its
ports over the North sea, its commerce and its industry developped especially in textile
and charcoal mining industry. |
