Norman typical houses |
L'Eure
Évreux :
From 1940 to 1944, Évreux was quite destructed by bombs. You should still see its
preseved sites : the cathedrale, the convent of Capucins, the Horloge tower and the
Gallo-Roman ruins.
Leaving Évreux, you ought to go at Vernon and Giverny
on Claude Monets tracks (the green shuttered house with "Nympheas").
Then crossing the Seine River at Gaillon, you should discover near Les
Andelys, the ruins of Gaillard castle, the fortress of Richard Lion's Heart.
Do not miss the natural and regional park of Brotonne, the abbeys of Bec
Hellouin, Bernay, Morteme, the castle of Harcourt. |

Seine-Maritime
Rouen :
The paving stoned street of Gros-Horloge
(a Renaissance house name) is lined with typical Norman timber framed houses.
Behind their roofs the Notre-Dame cathedrale stands on (gothic - 13th century). In its
back, you should see the Saint-Maclou church, with its bell and church towers (15th - 16th
centuries). In this district, you should not miss the Saint-Ouen church (gothic), the town
hall (18th century) located in a living quarter of the ancient abbey of Saint-Ouen.
You could also visit the fine Arts museum
(one of the richest of France - ceramic and paintings) and the Secq-des-Tournelles museum
(in the ancient Saint-Laurent church - bronze and art metalwork), and the court house
(gothic).
The abbeys of
Saint-Martin-de-Boscherville, Jumièges, Valmont are not to be missed as the castles
of Arques-la-Bataille, Bec, the Pierre Corneille's manor, and the seaside resorts
of Étretat, St-Valéry-en-Caux, Dieppe and Fécamp.
You should also see the pick of Berval, and the
