L'Allier
Moulins :
Nicknamed the Mal-Coiffee (Bad-Covered), the ancient and massive dungeon (from 15th
century) of Boubon dukes castle has been converted into a jail. From this period
remains also the Notre-Dame cathedrale, restored by Viollet-le-Duc in which you can admire
the famous triptych of Moulins Master. In the belfry's evolutes an automates'
family (of 1667) like Jacquemart father (name given to the belfry). The municipal library
(in the town hall) keeps a hundreds of manuscripts like the Souvigny Holly Bible (12th
century). You should visit the museum, the house of Anne de Beaujeu (Middle age
sculptures, German paintings and crockery collection of Nevers, Rouen, Moulins) and the
folklore museum of Bourbonnais.
The Bourbonnais is famous for its
romanesque churches of Souvigny (tombs of Charles Ist and Agnès of
Burgundy) at Saint-Menoux. Do not miss Meiliers, Gipcy, Ygrande
and Bourbon-l'Archambault (also spa ; its hot and radioactive highly
mineralised waters are recommended to health paralytics and rheumatisms). You should see Montluçon
and its medieval district, La Palisse (castle) and Vichy
(Tour Prisonnière museum), Saint-Yorre (spa), Rouzat
(the first railway viaduct built up by Eiffel). |

This department is a real cheeseboard.
Aurillac :
Aurillac has a wood craftworks tradition (especially wooden toys). At Murat,
you should see a Blessed Virgin of 14 meters high (Bonnevie), the Romanesque church of
Chaste and the priory of Bredons. In Saint-Flour you ought to visit the museum of
Haute-Auvergne and the castle of Val. |

La
Haute-Loire
Le Puy :
On one side, erected on the Corneilles rock, the statue of
Notre-Dame-de-France dominates the Velays capital city ; on the other side, the
Aiguilhes rock and the Saint-Michel chapel (10th - 11th centuries). The cathedrale
is a must when visiting Le Puy. This could be connected to a part of mystery as much by
the legend around its building as by its architectural romanesque style (the former chapel
date from 6th century) ; You should also see the Hôtel-Dieu, the Boiteux staircase.
From Brioude, charming city
with a famous food market, you could drive up to Auzon (village of the

the ramparts, lined of houses built with old stones. More in the South, you should not
miss a landscape of lakes and forests from Monastier-sur-Gazeille to
Saint-Christophe-sur-Dolaison crossing by Gerbier-des-Joncs mount
(Loire River source) and the village of
Sainte-Eulalie (a violet fair is organized here after july 12), Arlempes
(fortified village) and the castle of Montlaur.

Le
Puy de dôme
Clermont-Ferrand :
The spires of the Notre-Dame gothic cathedral in Volvic's lava soar in Clermont-Ferrands
skyward. Place of Poterne (with Amboise fountain) you have a wonderful panorama on the
Puys mountain range like Puy de Dome. Monferrands suburb kept a gothic and
Renaissance style. In Gras street you should see the Ranquet museum with the famous local
personalities souvenirs from Blaise Pascal to Desaix as well as local products. Notre-Dame-du-Port
is one of the beautiful Romanesque style church. You can visit the plateau of
Gergovie, site of the Gallic victory upon the Romanian legions (53 BC), Saint-Nectaire
(its romanesque church and its fountain), then the fortified village of
Montaigut-le-Blanc till to Issoire (Saint-Paul church, larger replique of
Notre-Dame-du-Port) ; Do not miss Riom, Auvergnes capital in the
Middle Age ; Thiers, cutlery center as well as many spas.
You should make a tour in the zoological
park of Saint-Augustins castle at Château-sur-Allier. The castles of Pal at
Saint-Pourcain-sur-Besbre or Gouttes at Thionne are not to be missed.
